Studio Ghibli Stops Making Movies

Toshio Suzuki announced yesterday a large restructuring of Studio Ghibli. Suzuki explained in front of cameras that the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki has had too many consequences and the studio has to start cutting costs. One of the first things to do is to restructure the department in charge of creating full-length films in order to produce films for others and focus on making money from licenses of films done in the past. The team in charge of Momonoma will continue with the work, but most likely it will suffer cuts because it’s a department where almost all the employees are temporary or freelancers.

“For the moment we are going to stop making new movies for a while and rethink our priorities”

Toshio Suzuki thinks that the stop will be something temporary. On the other hand, Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t see the future of Ghibli very clear 🙂
