Mosaics in Akihabara

I came across these mosaics in a mysterious office building in Akihabara that we visited the other day; they are somewhat weird but original anyhow.

Used panties vending machines

Used panties vending machines are another example of the particularities of certain aspects of Japanese society. Young ladies, sometimes even teenagers, use some panties for a while, and then they sell them to get some extra money. Selling used panties is not legal in Japan anymore, thus not many of these vending machines remain on the streets of Japan.

The Japan Photo Project

The photographer from Barcelona Tina Bagué and Japanese photographer Toru Morimoto decided, almost two years ago, to take photographs around Japan from north to south, east to west. The idea took shape during a long time, after months of preparations and search for sponsors, on the 1st of January of 2010 the two photographers started their journey throughout the land of the rising sun. Their objective: to document Japan photographically during 365 days. In black and white, and in color. In analog and in digital.

Tina tells me: “The truth is that it is a real challenge. Driving, cooking, traveling, retouching, film developing and keeping the website running and updating it weekly, it’s not an easy task, and even more during 365 days and living inside an only 6 meter long RV. Since January we have stepped on the snow in Hokkaido, traveled along a part of Henro trail in Shikoku, interviewed a lot of artisans and got lost on countless rice paddy fields. However, I believe that the most difficult part is still to come. The raining season and intense humid heat during Summer months will be the ultimate endurance test”.

You can follow Tina and Toru adventures at JapanPhotoProject.com.
